About

The Rossland Youth Action network is a project of the Family Action Network (new for 2023) through funding from the Columbia Basin Trust’s Community Directed Youth Funds.  YAN’s goal is to work collaboratively and actively to build community capacity to increase the quality and quantity of youth directed programming; provide youth with space and programming that is safe, engaging, and relevant to interests and goals and strengthen the community cohesion of youth.

The YAN has provided many programs and events including youth film competitions, leadership workshop series, cooking workshops, a diverse array of arts programs, bouldering club and an annual Youth Month filled with events celebrating the diverse and talented youth of Rossland.  The key to success has been the connections and partnerships built with organizations that support our youth.  The Youth Action Network has established working relationships with schools, community organizations and local businesses that has leveraged community support for youth projects.

In 2023, we are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of YAN. Post- COVID shutdown, we have seen a significant increase in attendance and costs, and as a result, we have currently had to pause some of our programs. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to ensure that we can continue to provide our youth with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.

We offer a variety of programs that are well-attended and impactful. To name a few:

-Drop-in: Offered 3-4 times a week, youth are free to play ping-pong, foosball, do arts and crafts, have a snack, play video games or watch a movie, do homework, play board games, and more in our fun space. Many of the youth that come to our center stay until our programs end at night, and we want to ensure that hungry kids get fed!

-Survivalist Adventure Club: essential outdoor skills training by a Search & Rescue team

-Free Mental Health Counselling: Subsidizing sessions at Kootenay Counselling to be free for youth, confidential and empowering.

-Maker Lab (3D Printing, Graphic Design, Coding): Teaching tech-inclined youth new skills for the future

-Dungeons and Dragons: one of our most dedicated clubs, always expanding!

-Farm-to-table Cooking Club: Always at capacity, a local chef teaches youth how to make fresh, healthy, creative meals and learn new techniques.

-Youth film comps: This year we had 10 youth short film submissions as part of the Mountain Film Fest, sometimes we will run photography or video clinics with local photographers or videographers.

-LGBTQIA+ Club: providing a safe space for friendship, support, creative outlets, and activism opportunities for youth.

-Art Club

-Bouldering and Pizza at Flux Climbing

-First Aid Training opportunities

-Guitar Lessons

-Activism efforts for climate awareness

-Special events such as Escape Room trips, Laser Tag, Pool Parties, Karaoke, Roller Parties , movies, bowling, and more.

Your support, no matter the amount, would make a huge impact on the lives of the youth in our community.
